Animal Rights Community Seeks Answers in the Death of Ülker Güleryüz
Ankara, Turkey – April 2025
The death of Ülker Güleryüz, an 81-year-old resident of Ankara’s Altındağ district known for feeding and caring for stray dogs, has raised serious concerns among Turkey’s animal rights community. Güleryüz lost her life in a house fire on February 18, 2025, just hours after being targeted on social media for her efforts to support local stray animals.
A Target of Online Harassment
Earlier the same day, Güleryüz had been subjected to online criticism by individuals accusing her of endangering public health and safety by feeding street dogs in her neighborhood. Posts circulated widely on social media, sparking backlash from some members of the public.
That evening, a fire broke out in her home. Emergency services responded to the scene, but Güleryüz was unable to escape and was later pronounced dead.
Cause of Fire and Investigative Findings
Following the incident, animal rights lawyers and organizations raised concerns about the timing of the fire and the online threats directed at Güleryüz. The Ankara Bar Association Animal Rights Center formally requested that the incident be investigated as a potential case of arson and murder.
However, the Ankara Fire Department concluded in its official report that the fire was accidental. According to the findings, the blaze was most likely caused by fabric placed too close to a stove. Investigators reported no clear signs of foul play. The neighbours mentioned that poor woman didn`t have even electricity or a heater.
The activists continue to call for a thorough and transparent review of the case.
What Happened to Her Dog?
One of Güleryüz’s dogs, Bambam, had been removed by municipal authorities prior to the fire as part of a local stray animal control operation. The dog was later adopted by a shelter manager.
Following Güleryüz’s funeral, reports emerged that Bambam had visited her gravesite and remained there for an extended period. The incident drew public attention and was widely shared online.
Ongoing Concerns from the Animal Welfare Community
Animal rights advocates view the death of Ülker Güleryüz as emblematic of the increasing social and institutional pressure faced by individuals who care for stray animals. Many point to growing hostility toward street animals, as well as recent government policies that they argue lack adequate protections for both animals and the people who care for them.
MP Perihan Koca has initiated a parliamentary inquiry into the circumstances of Güleryüz’s death, with the aim of clarifying what happened and addressing broader concerns regarding the safety of animal welfare volunteers.
Advocates continue to call for accountability, policy reform, and greater protections for both animals and their caretakers.
