Kenny

Meet Kenny.

Not long ago, his name was Oscar.

His story, we had witnessed, began on a lonely stretch of road near Çatalca, on the outskirts of Istanbul, where there was nothing around him except endless fields. No houses. No people. No one to notice a dog slowly disappearing.

When we first saw him, he could barely walk. Every step was painful, yet he still tried to run away. It wasn't because he was aggressive. It was because he had learned that humans could not be trusted.

As we got closer, we understood why.

His body was covered with hundreds of ticks and burrs. The burrs had worked their way deep into his skin, leaving countless tiny wounds. His paws were raw and bleeding after walking for miles on scorching summer roads. He was severely dehydrated, exhausted, and barely hanging on.

Kenny spent the next two days at the veterinary clinic receiving intensive care. Every tick was carefully removed, his wounds were cleaned, his paws were bandaged, and blood tests revealed that he would need months of treatment before he could fully recover.

Then we discovered something unexpected.

He had a microchip.

For a brief moment, we felt hopeful. Surely someone had been desperately searching for him.

Instead, we reached the registered owner, who seemed more interested in asking how we had found his phone number than whether Kenny was alive.

He told us he had given Oscar to a friend. According to him, the dog had escaped from the friend's balcony. The friend had never mentioned it because he didn't want to upset him. By then, he had already gotten another dog.

It wasn't a story of a beloved pet who had gone missing.

It was the story of a dog who had simply been replaced.

Oscar had been forgotten.

So we decided to leave that name behind.

Today, his name is Kenny.

He is finally safe. His recovery will take time, patience, and a great deal of care, but for the first time in a long time, he no longer has to survive alone. He only has to heal.

Sadly, Kenny's story is not unique.

Every single day in Turkey, hundreds of dogs are abandoned by the very people they trusted most. Most of them are never found. Most of them never receive a second chance.

Kenny did.

Now it's our turn to make sure the rest of his story is filled with the love, dignity, and safety he should have known from the very beginning.
